Routes and itineraries to reach one of the most beautiful lakes in the Val di Fassa
Lake Antermoia is one of the most striking pearls of the Dolomites, a corner of paradise nestled between the peaks of the Catinaccio. Its surreal beauty, with its turquoise waters surrounded by rocky walls, makes it an unmissable destination for mountain lovers.
For those staying at the Hotel Cristallo in Canazei, this excursion is an unforgettable experience, perfect for immersing oneself in unspoilt nature and discovering the magic of the Dolomites.
Departure from Campitello di Fassa - Micheluzzi Refuge
The route starting from Campitello di Fassa is one of the most scenic and challenging options, taking you to discover the heart of the Val Duron. The route begins by following the dirt road up the valley, surrounded by greenery. After about an hour's walk, you reach Rifugio Micheluzzi (1,860 m), where you can take your first break and admire the view of the valley below. If you prefer to avoid the initial walk, there is also a convenient shuttle bus service that will take you directly to the refuge, allowing you to save energy for the more demanding part of the hike.
Continuing on trail 578, the path becomes steeper, leading you to the Passo delle Ciaregole (2,282 m), where the panorama becomes even more spectacular. A gentle descent will lead you to the basin of the Rifugio Antermoia (2,496 m), an ideal place for a regenerating break before tackling the last stretch, which will take you to Lake Antermoia in about 20 minutes.
- Duration: approx. 4-5 hours (one way)
- Altitude difference: 1,100 metres
- Refuges along the route: Rifugio Micheluzzi, Baita Lino Brach, Rifugio Antermoia
Departure from the Gardeccia Refuge
Another popular route starts from Rifugio Gardeccia, easily reached by shuttle bus from Vigo di Fassa. The path winds its way through the suggestive Pian di Sopra, crossing woods that provide pleasant shade on hot days. After about an hour, you reach Rifugio Preuss, where we recommend you take a break to catch your breath and enjoy the view of Catinaccio.
From here, the trail continues to Rifugio Vajolet, one of the most iconic mountain huts in the Dolomites, famous for its breathtaking views. But that's not all: continuing on trail 586, you will reach Rifugio Principe, located at 2,430 metres. This refuge is perfect for a panoramic break, from where you can admire the Catinaccio and the surrounding peaks.
Conclude the route by climbing to the Antermoia Pass (2,770 m), the highest point of the hike, from where you can enjoy a spectacular panorama. Finally, a short descent will take you to Lake Antermoia.
- Duration: approx. 3.5-4 hours (one way)
- Altitude difference: approx. 900 metres
- Refuges along the route: Gardeccia Refuge, Preuss Refuge, Principe Refuge, Vajolet Refuge, Antermoia Refuge.
Departure from Mazzin
If you are looking for a quieter and less crowded route, the itinerary starting in Mazzin is a good alternative, although not less demanding. Path 580 crosses the Val d'Udai, a less-travelled area, but the difference in altitude and the length of the route require good physical preparation.
The walk begins in the woods and gradually becomes more scenic. After an hour's ascent, you will reach the Dona Pass (2,516 m), from where you can admire spectacular views of the surrounding Dolomite peaks.
Continuing on, you will descend to Rifugio Antermoia, where you can take a break to recover your energy and admire the beauty of the surroundings. From here, you will reach Lake Antermoia in a few minutes.
- Duration: approx. 5 hours (one way)
- Altitude difference: approx. 1,200 metres
- Refuges along the route: Antermoia Refuge
Lake Antermoia: what to expect on arrival
When you finally reach Lake Antermoia, you will be rewarded by the sight of crystal-clear water reflecting the imposing rock faces of the Catinaccio. The contrast between the deep blue of the lake and the surrounding rocks is one of the most fascinating natural spectacles of the Dolomites.
A few steps from the lake, you will find the Rifugio Antermoia, an excellent resting place where you can relax with a typical Ladin dish, or stay overnight if you wish to prolong your mountain experience.
The descent
After reaching the lake, it is possible to turn back along the same route as on the outward journey or choose to continue on other variations of the trail. The descent is generally less demanding, but should not be underestimated, as some sections can be slippery, especially during the wet season. It is important to maintain concentration, especially on rocky and steep trails.
If you choose the route from Rifugio Micheluzzi or Gardeccia, the descent to Campitello di Fassa or Vigo di Fassa is gradual, with several vantage points offering excellent views of the surrounding peaks. During the return journey, it is always recommended to take breaks to avoid muscle overload, especially in the event of fatigue. The total duration of the descent varies according to the route chosen, but on average it takes about three to four hours.
The excursion to Lake Antermoia is a unique experience for those staying at the Hotel Cristallo in Canazei, offering extraordinary views and the chance to immerse themselves in the wild nature of the Dolomites. After a day of trails, refuges and spectacular peaks, returning to the hotel will allow you to relax and recharge your batteries, ready for new adventures in the mountains.
