Far from the bustle of ski slopes, there’s a more intimate and authentic way to discover the snow-covered Dolomites. Ciampac, with its trails winding through breathtaking panoramas and endless silence, is the perfect destination for anyone looking for a different kind of winter experience. Walking on snowshoes means connecting directly with Val di Fassa’s unspoiled nature, noticing details that would otherwise escape a hurried glance. Hotel Cristallo in Canazei is the ideal starting point for this adventure, combining comf
The route: a loop between sky and snow
Reaching the starting point is very easy: from Alba di Canazei, a comfortable gondola lift takes you in just a few minutes up to 2,160 meters, where the trail begins. Until March 30, 2026, Ciampac offers a route dedicated exclusively to non-skiers who want to enjoy winter away from the crowds.
The itinerary is a pleasant loop of about 3 kilometers. Walking right beneath the majestic slopes of Monte Colac, you’ll enjoy wonderful viewpoints with incredible vistas of the Sella Group, Piz Boè, and the entire Ciampac basin—an area of glacial origin with remarkable scenic and geological charm. Every step through this fairytale landscape helps regenerate body and mind as you breathe in the pure high-altitude air.
A freedom-filled adventure
This outing is accessible to everyone and designed to be done independently every day. You can choose the pace that best suits your day: it’s ideal for adults and for children from about 8–10 years old, perfect for families or couples who want a moment of true disconnection.
You don’t need to be an expert—and if you don’t have the right gear, no problem. You can rent snowshoes and poles conveniently down in the valley (for example at Ski Paolo in Alba, or at several rental shops in Canazei), or directly up at Ciampac at Rifugio Crepa Neigra. The slow rhythm of snowshoeing lets you savor every moment, stop for photos of the snowy peaks, and fully immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of Val di Fassa.
Tasty stops in Ciampac’s mountain huts
To recharge after the walk—or simply to enjoy a delicious snack—there are four mountain huts along or near the route, all easily reachable on foot, including the well-known Tobià del Giagher and Rifugio Ciampac. These places offer a warm welcome and the chance to taste authentic Ladin and Trentino cuisine. On the menu you’ll find perfect winter classics such as canederli (dumplings), tagliatelle with venison, and the must-have apple strudel of Dolomite tradition.
What to wear for the perfect snowshoe outing
Because this experience is suitable for everyone, preparation is simple—but essential to enjoy it to the fullest. The key to staying comfortable on snow (without freezing—or sweating too much while walking) is classic layering, so you can adapt easily to effort and high-altitude temperatures. On your feet, waterproof and supportive trekking boots are essential: it’s best to avoid soft après-ski boots, which don’t provide the right support for snowshoe bindings. Don’t forget to pack sunglasses and high-protection sunscreen in a small backpack—the glare of snow above 2,000 meters is unforgiving! And for a touch of true winter magic, bring a thermos of hot tea to sip during breaks.
Facing Gran Vernel: an unforgettable emotion
As you follow the Ciampac loop, surrounded by the muffled silence of the woods, your eyes will inevitably be drawn to a giant of rock: Gran Vernel. Often described as Marmolada’s “wild neighbor,” this peak dominates the landscape with breathtaking majesty. Standing before its sheer walls, sculpted by ice and snow, brings a deep sense of awe and connection with the most authentic soul of the Dolomites. Take your time to admire it: the viewpoints along the route are perfect for spectacular photos—especially when the clear morning light or the golden afternoon glow turns this masterpiece of nature into pure magic.
