Whether it be short, accessible hikes or more challenging routes, guests can immerse themselves in an area that enchants with its beauty and gives indelible memories.
In this article, we explore some of the best winter hiking proposals in the area, perfect for those seeking the combination of nature and adventure.
The classic Val Duron
This route starts from Campitello di Fassa and follows the Via Crucis that climbs with a fair gradient to the old village of Pian. It continues along the road towards Baita Fraines, facing a constant gradient and a total difference in altitude of about 200 metres. After about two hours of walking (one way), you reach the Micheluzzi hut, located at an altitude of 1860 metres.
The total length of the route is about 7 km. This is a fairly demanding itinerary, recommended for hikers seeking peace and quiet away from the chaos of the valley.
In the event of snow or ice, crampons or snowshoes may be useful to ensure greater stability. There are several panoramic viewpoints over the valley along the way.
The high altitude of Ciampac
The hike begins in Alba di Canazei, from where the Ciampac cable car takes you to an altitude of 2100 metres. The walking route starts at the mountain station, and consists of well-marked tracks, which cover approximately 4 km, round trip, and a total duration of two hours.
The difficulty is moderate, with minimal altitude difference, and is suitable for those seeking a high-altitude experience without great physical exertion. Alpine refuges are also open for skiers.
Valle San Nicolò: a scenic route
The starting point for the Valle di San Nicolò is in the locality of Meida, near Pozza di Fassa. The route begins on a well-trodden dirt road which, after about 5.5 km, leads to Baita Ciampiè, at an altitude of about 1900 metres. This excursion lasts a total of about five and a half hours.
The route is quite varied: the first part climbs gently, then becomes more challenging with hairpin bends and greater inclines until it levels out again in the final sections.
It is recommended for trained hikers with good physical fitness. Along the route, you will also come across suggestive viewpoints, which are particularly appreciated on sunny days.
Gardeccia: in the heart of the Catinaccio
The itinerary to Gardeccia begins in Muncion, a hamlet of Pera di Fassa, from where you follow a snow-covered road to the Gardeccia basin, located at 1948 metres. With a difference in altitude of around 400 metres and a walking time of four hours round trip, this itinerary is suitable for those looking for a relatively easy walk but immersed in a spectacular landscape.
Along the route, climbs alternate with flat stretches. When you reach the Gardeccia basin, the Gardeccia and Stella Alpina refuges offer refreshment and warmth, allowing you to take a break before returning.
Val Monzoni: between woods and glades
The Val Monzoni is a hidden gem that is revealed step by step. From Meida, following trail marker 603 past the Chapel of the Crucifix, the trail winds its way for four hours in a wild and authentic environment. The 450-metre climb to the Malga Monzoni (1,862 m) alternates between steep stretches and gentler passages, always surrounded by fabulous views.
It is a route that requires attention to weather conditions: its beauty is best expressed on clear days, when the surrounding peaks stand out clearly against the blue sky.
The route from Vigo to Pera with a view of the valley
The itinerary linking Vigo and Pera di Fassa runs along a scenic forest road that covers about 5 km through woods and meadows. The starting point is the centre of Vigo, from where you follow an uphill section to then cross the Ruf de Pantl stream and continue on a route that offers panoramic views of the Costabella ridges.
With a total height difference of around 150 metres and a duration of two hours, this trail is ideal for those who wish to take a leisurely walk.
The trail is also suitable for less experienced hikers, with flat sections and gentle inclines.
Advice and safety in the mountains
Before setting off on any itinerary, remember that the winter mountains require caution and preparation. Always inform yourself at the tourist information points or directly at your accommodation and always consult the weather forecast.
Communicate your itinerary to someone and leave properly equipped: snowshoes, poles, winter boots and layered clothing are essential. Take water, energy snacks and a first aid kit with you.
To get around in the snow, snowshoes are the ideal tool. Several hires are equipped to hire sports equipment for your mountain outings.
Important: it is possible that some trails require, by law, artva equipment for signalling and searching, as well as a snow shovel and probe to guarantee a suitable rescue operation.
The Val di Fassa is a treasure to be discovered with respect: do not go off the marked paths, take your rubbish down to the valley and, if you are travelling with your four-legged friend, keep him on a leash. Never forget prudence and respect for the mountains at home.
Each route has its own story to tell and, with the right precautions, will give you unforgettable memories of these magical places where nature reigns supreme.
Every winter route in Canazei and its surroundings is an invitation to slow down, to feel the silence of the snow and to be surprised by the scenery.
