The advantages of e-biking at altitude
Until a few years ago, exploring the Dolomite peaks on two wheels required months of intense training. Today, modern pedal-assist mountain bikes (e-MTBs) have revolutionized the way people experience cycling routes in Val di Fassa. The electric motor gives you the extra boost needed to tackle even the steepest climbs with a smile.
The real advantage? Being able to lift your gaze from the handlebars and enjoy the scenery. Without the strain of extreme gradients, you’ll have the clarity to admire alpine blooms, take stunning photos, and cover much greater distances in less time. E-bikes don’t take away the sense of adventure or the physical activity—they simply make it more accessible, turning exhausting effort into pure enjoyment.
The route: from Canazei to the foot of the massif
Our Sassolungo e-bike tour begins right outside the doors of Hotel Cristallo in Canazei. A short and pleasant warm-up along the cycle path takes you towards Campitello di Fassa. From here, you have two options: stronger riders (or those who want to test their battery right away) can start climbing through the forest; alternatively, to quickly reach higher altitude, you can take the Col Rodella cable car, which accepts bikes and brings you above 2,400 meters in just a few minutes.
Once at altitude, the route winds around the Sassolungo and Sasso Piatto, passing through the so-called “City of Stones” (an area scattered with large boulders that fell over the centuries) and then towards Passo Sella.
The landscape constantly changes: some sections cross alpine meadows, others run close to dramatic rock faces. At dusk, when the light is just right, the Dolomites glow with the pink hues known locally as Enrosadira.
Technical details and difficulty
Although the electric motor is a great ally, it’s important to understand the key details of this route.
- Distance: the classic loop is 30–35 km, depending on the chosen variations and starting point.
- Elevation gain: if you cycle the entire climb from Canazei, the total ascent exceeds 1.000 meters. Using lifts significantly reduces the uphill effort, allowing you to enjoy rolling terrain at altitude and a long final descent.
- Terrain: a mix of gravel roads, forest tracks, dirt paths, and some singletrack sections.
- Who it’s for: a moderately difficult ride. It doesn’t require professional-level fitness, but you should be comfortable riding a mountain bike on gravel and uneven terrain.
Mountain huts and scenic stops
What would a cycling holiday in the Dolomites be without a stop at a mountain hut? Along the Sassolungo loop, you’ll find several historic huts, including Rifugio Comici, Rifugio Sasso Piatto, and Rifugio Sandro Pertini.
- These stops are essential for two reasons:
first, most huts are now equipped with charging stations for e-bike batteries. - second (and perhaps more importantly), they offer the perfect opportunity to refuel with authentic Ladin and Trentino cuisine. After a few hours in the saddle, nothing is more satisfying than a plate of steaming canederli, venison tagliatelle, or a slice of traditional apple strudel - best enjoyed on a sunny terrace with views of the peaks.
Back to Hotel Cristallo: bike services and relaxation
Once you’ve completed the loop and descended back to the valley, returning to Hotel Cristallo marks the start of the second part of your day.
The hotel offers a secure bike storage area where you can leave your e-bike overnight. Then it’s time to relax in the wellness center: a sauna to ease your leg muscles, a whirlpool to unwind, and an indoor pool for a gentle swim. In the evening, you can dine at the hotel’s restaurant and pair your meal with a local wine.
The Sassolungo e-bike tour is an experience well worth doing, both for the route itself and for the incredible scenery along the way. If you’re planning your stay and would like to include this ride, the reception at Hotel Cristallo can help you find the best e-bike rental and provide maps of the route.
